Port Colborne’s Fill the Fire Truck toy drive falling short; fire chief says people can still donate – StCatharinesStandard.ca

The annual Fill the Fire Truck toy drive is “definitely short” this year, says Port Colborne Fire and Emergency Services Chief Scott Lawson.

Held for the past six years, it collects unwrapped toys for children aged infant to 18, as well as non-perishable food items for Port Cares, the city’s primary agency serving needy and vulnerable people.

The fire service recently held a drive-thru toy drop-off at its headquarters at 3 Killaly St. W.

“We’re significantly down from what we have seen in the past. We do understand that a lot of businesses and homes are struggling to make ends meet,” said Lawson.

On the monetary side, the chief said the event usually collects between $2,000 to $4,000 for toy purchases to fill in any gaps left in the age groups. That, too, is down.

Lawson said residents can drop off toys and non-perishable food items in a blue bin just inside the lobby at headquarters Mondays through Fridays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. until Christmas Day.

“We’ll be dropping off to Port Cares as families come in.”

Firefighters will be at the city’s reverse Christmas parade Saturday at H.H. Knoll Lakeview Park from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

They’ll be at the entrance to the park just off Elm Street, collecting any items residents bring.

He said some items needed for kids in the 14- to 18-year-old range would be hygiene kits and toiletries, such as deodorant or perfume.

Registration to receive toys through Port Cares is open until Dec. 17

People who meet the criteria to register can fill out a wish list for children up to age 18 in their household and the agency’s “elves” will put together a prepacked bag to wrap and put under the tree.

Proof of income and identification for the children and caregiver will be needed when picking up items. Registration is available through an online form.

After registering, a pickup time will be arranged. Questions can be directed to [email protected] or 905-401-3499.
