Special delivery from Rochester: Fire truck donated to storm-ravaged community – Sippican Week

The tornadoes that devastated sections of Kentucky Dec. 10 destroyed the fire station in Cayce, Ky. and all four pieces of apparatus used by the department.

But thanks to the generosity of the Rochester Fire Department, one major piece of equipment will soon be replaced, according to information from the Rochester Fire Department Facebook page.

Within minutes of hearing about the Cayce department’s devastation, Rochester Fire Chief Scott Wiegel thought of the Rochester Fire Department’s spare 3,000 gallon tanker which is not just a water tender, but also a pumper.

Following an emergency meeting of the Rochester Select Board on Dec. 29, the 1988 FMC tanker/pumper was released to surplus, which allowed the Rochester Fire Department to donate the vehicle to the Cayce Fire Department.

Chief Weigel has spoken with Chief Wade Adams of the Cayce Fire Department, who is “overjoyed, humbled and extremely grateful to receive this apparatus,’’ Rochester Fire Department wrote on Facebook.

The donation “will serve as their only piece of equipment at this time’’ and will allow the 21-member department to “get back on its feet serving their community as they continue to pick up the pieces.’’

The vehicle is enroute to Cayce via RYCO Excavating in Middleboro, which is delivering the vehicle at no charge.

“The Rochester Fire Department is humbled and overwhelmed with the tremendous amount of support from our community, residents to businesses who have offered to assist us in getting this truck to its destination,’’ the department wrote.
