Worth more as scrap than council was offered in the sole bid it received for the truck

The Blind River fire department’s 1989 aerial fire truck has gone to a scrap dealer for slightly more than $2,600.

The truck was taken out of service in June after it broke down in Algoma Mills on a call to assist with fighting a residential fire in Elliot Lake. After inspection by a mechanic and the age of the truck, it was determined it could not be fixed.

The town had put it up for sale but received only one bid at $200.

“Because of the age and condition of the vehicle, it was determined that the vehicle was worth more as scrap. The scrap dealer the town has been working with for other recyclable materials indicated the value to be approximately $2,500,” treasurer Sue Dent said in a report to council. “In addition, the tires on the truck were virtually new and Public Works indicated that they could be repurposed on other equipment. The tires have an estimated value of $1,800.”

“The fire truck has been picked up by the scrap dealer and the town has received $2,616.75,” Dent added.
