Outbound Route 28 closed near Tarentum after vehicle hits fire truck responding to wreck – TribLIVE

Both outbound lanes of Route 28 near the Tarentum exit are shut because of a multi-vehicle crash, according to authorities.

First responders were dispatched around 2:30 p.m. to just past Exit 14 near the area where Bakerstown Road crosses over the highway for a single-vehicle crash, according to an Allegheny County 911 supervisor.

While crews were on the scene, a vehicle crashed into one of the fire trucks that responded to the first crash, the supervisor said.

Tribune-Review news partners WPXI-TV reported that the fire truck was from Summit Hose Volunteer Fire Co.

The driver of that vehicle that hit the truck was pronounced dead at the scene, the TV station reported.

No other injuries were reported as a result of the crash.

Police diverted traffic off the highway at the Creighton Exit.

The road is closed between the Russellton/Creighton (Exit 13) and Freeport/Millerstown (Exit 16) interchanges, PennDOT announced.

Troopers from the state police station in Kittanning responded to the scene to investigate the cause of the crashes.
